Charlie Thomas Biography
Thomas was born on April 7, 1937, in Lynchburg, Virginia, in the United States of America. He was the father of Charles “Happy” Thomas Jr. and grandfather of hip-hop producer Charlie “Bambu” Thomas.
Charlie was performing with The Five Crowns at the Apollo Theater in 1958 when George Treadwell fired his group, called The Drifters. Treadwell went on to recruit The Five Crowns to be the new “Drifters” afterwards.
In 1988, Thomas was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Drifters and was given a Pioneer Award by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1999. On 21 May 2011, he performed with the Drifters in Cranston, Rhode Island at the Vintage New England Theater.
